CAC Cracks Down on Unregistered PoS Operators: What You Need to Know
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has issued a stern warning to Point-of-Sale (PoS) operators in Nigeria, announcing a nationwide enforcement campaign against businesses operating without proper registration. As of January 1, 2026, no PoS operator will be allowed to conduct business in Nigeria without completing full CAC registration .
The CAC cited the rising number of unregistered PoS operators as a clear violation of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Agent Banking Regulations. The commission accused some fintech companies of enabling this trend by onboarding unregistered agents, a practice it described as reckless and dangerous to Nigeria’s financial system .
PoS operators who fail to register by the deadline will face severe consequences, including:
– Shutdown of business operations
– Seizure of unregistered PoS terminals
– Placement on a watchlist and reporting to the Central Bank of Nigeria
To avoid these consequences, PoS operators are advised to regularize their business status immediately. The registration process typically involves submitting basic business details, proof of identity, and a modest fee .
