BREAKING: Court Grants Abubakar Malami, Family Members N500m Bail
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, his wife, and son bail in the sum of N500 million each. The court’s decision comes after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Malami and his family members on a 16-count charge bordering on money laundering .
Justice Emeka Nwite, who presided over the case, imposed strict conditions on the bail, including:
– Each defendant must produce two sureties in like sum
– The sureties must own landed properties within Maitama, Asokoro, or Gwarimpa districts of Abuja
– The title documents of the properties must be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court
– The defendants and their sureties must submit two recent passport photographs each to the court registry
– Malami must deposit his international passport and other travel documents with the court and is prohibited from leaving the country without the court’s permission .
The EFCC had filed a 16-count charge against Malami, his son, Abdulaziz, and his wife, alleging financial transactions amounting to about N9 billion. Malami has been in EFCC custody since December 8, 2025, after reportedly failing to meet the bail conditions set by the commission .
The court has fixed February 17 for the commencement of the trial in the case. Pending the perfection of their bail conditions, Malami will be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre .
