Bandits’ N15m Levy: Sokoto Community Lives in Fear

Residents of Bazar community and surrounding villages in Sokoto State’s Yabo Local Government Area are gripped by fear following a demand by suspected bandits for a N15 million levy. The bandits have threatened to unleash deadly attacks on residents who fail to comply, warning that farmlands could be destroyed and harvested produce lost.

This is not the first time the community has faced such demands. Previous attacks have left residents traumatized, and many are now living in fear. A recent raid resulted in the abduction of seven people, including the village head, and the looting of shops worth millions of naira.

The community has appealed to the authorities, including the police, for urgent help. However, residents are concerned about the slow response and are worried that the situation may escalate. They are now calling on the Chairman of Yabo Local Government Area and the Sokoto State Government to intervene and strengthen security in the area.

This incident highlights a growing trend of banditry and extortion in the region. Nearby villages have faced similar demands, with bandits demanding millions of naira in levies. The people of Bazar and surrounding communities are crying out for help, seeking protection and relief from the menace of banditry.
