Bandit Attacks in Southern Kaduna: A Cry for Help

The Southern Kaduna region has been plagued by bandit attacks, resulting in the deaths of four residents, including a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, and the abduction of many others. These attacks have been ongoing, with many incidents going unreported due to alleged political interference and restrictions on journalists.

According to reports, the bandits ambushed a vehicle carrying passengers from Awon village to Kachia town headquarters on Thursday evening, killing the driver, Ibrahim Makama, and Jonathan Jeremiah, a recent NYSC graduate. Some passengers were kidnapped, while others escaped.

Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of media attention to these attacks, which have left communities displaced and traumatized. Rev. Fr. Agbo Gabriel signed a statement lamenting the persistent neglect and insecurity in the area, highlighting the need for urgent intervention.

– On September 24, bandits attacked Kauran Fawa village, killing one resident and injuring another.
– On September 7, gunmen attacked Wakeh village, killing eight people and burning homes and property.
– Seven victims, mostly minors, were killed in Southern Kaduna and laid to rest in Unguwan Rimi village.

The Kaduna State government has launched the “Kaduna Model,” a peace initiative aimed at addressing insecurity. However, critics have raised concerns over the approach, citing direct engagement with notorious bandit leaders as potentially flawed .
