ASUU Raises Concerns Over Poor Retirement Package for University Lecturers
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed deep concern over the inadequate pension package for retired university lecturers in Nigeria. According to ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the Contributory Pension Scheme introduced in 2024 has worsened the welfare conditions of retired lecturers.
Piwuna lamented that many retired lecturers are struggling to make ends meet, with some receiving as low as N150,000 per month after dedicating over 40 years to the education sector. He highlighted the harsh economic realities faced by these lecturers, including rising costs of living, healthcare challenges, and supporting their families.
The union has consistently advocated for a university-based pension fund administration to address the anomalies in the current pension scheme. ASUU believes that this would ensure that retired lecturers receive a more dignified and sustainable pension package.
