ASUU Gives Government Ultimatum, Threatens Two-Week Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has mobilized its chapters nationwide in preparation for a possible two-week warning strike starting October 13, 2025. This decision follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to address long-standing issues affecting university lecturers.
Signing and Implementation of the Renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement: The union wants the government to sign and implement the agreement to improve the welfare of university lecturers and enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian universities globally.
ASUU is seeking sustainable funding for university revitalization to improve the quality of education and infrastructure in Nigerian universities.
The union wants the government to pay outstanding salary arrears, including 25-35% salary arrears owed to lecturers.
ASUU is demanding the resolution of promotion backlogs and settlement of third-party deductions.
The union also wants the government to end the alleged victimization of lecturers in some federal universities.
The government has yet to respond meaningfully to ASUU’s demands, despite the ultimatum. ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, lamented the government’s silence, saying that there is no meaningful development deserving of consideration to be reported .
The planned strike may disrupt academic activities in universities across Nigeria, exacerbating the existing challenges in the education sector. The strike may also worsen the “Japa” migration trend among lecturers and further erode public confidence in Nigeria’s tertiary education system .
The ASUU strike is a significant development in the ongoing struggle between university lecturers and the Federal Government. The outcome will have far-reaching implications for the education sector and the country as a whole.
