Allegations of Alterations in Nigeria’s Tax Laws Spark Concerns
A member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, has raised concerns over alleged discrepancies between the tax laws passed by the National Assembly and the versions later gazetted and released to the public. Dasuki claimed that the gazetted copy of the new tax laws differs from the harmonized version passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives .
According to Dasuki, he compared the gazetted copies with the House Votes and Proceedings and the harmonized version agreed upon by both chambers of the National Assembly. He discovered notable discrepancies, which he believes undermine the legislature’s credibility and constitute a breach of constitutional provisions .
The lawmaker warned that allowing laws that deviate from those passed by the National Assembly to be released to the public could have serious implications for the country’s legislative process. He urged the Speaker to ensure that all relevant documents are submitted to the Committee of the Whole for comprehensive re.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, acknowledged Dasuki’s concerns and assured that the matter would be addressed. The House has resolved to investigate the alleged alterations in the new tax laws, which are set to take effect on January 1, 2026
