Akwa Ibom’s Education Crisis: Luxury SUVs Amidst Classroom Despair
In oil-rich Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, a disturbing paradox exists. While government officials drive luxury SUVs, pupils in public primary schools sit on bare floors, lacking basic facilities. A viral video from Ibiaku Itam Primary School exposed the harsh reality: dilapidated classrooms, broken desks, and children writing on their stomachs.
Akwa Ibom has 1,164 public primary schools, but only 31 model schools are being constructed, leaving 1,133 schools unattended. The situation is dire, with inadequate seats, broken windows, and cracked floors.

Despite budgeting for seats, the administration’s priorities are unclear. In 2023 and 2024, no expenditure was recorded for seats, and the 2025 budget allocations are yet to be accounted for. Officials have promised to address the issue, but the silence is deafening.
The people of Akwa Ibom demand answers. When will the government prioritize education? How will the funds be utilized? It’s time for accountability and action.
What’s your take? Should the government declare a state of emergency in education?
