Akwa Ibom Governor Approves Release of 2025 Health Counterfunding
The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has approved the immediate release of the 2025 counterfunding for various health-related programs across the state. The State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Ekem John, made this announcement during a ministerial briefing in Uyo .
The funding will support several health programs, including:
– Health insurance
– Primary healthcare
– Immunization
– Family planning
– Nutrition
According to Dr. John, the governor’s approval and signing of the counterfunding release before the end of January 2026, demonstrates his commitment to improving the state’s healthcare system .
The commissioner highlighted some of the state’s healthcare achievements, including:
– Leprosy and Tuberculosis control: Akwa Ibom has done well in this area, with the state commissioning five portable X-ray machines with the support of the Global Fund.
– HIV/AIDS: Although the state has not done too well in this area, there has been an improvement in reporting HIV cases. The state has identified 168,000 persons living with HIV/AIDS, and 99% of those who have HIV know their status .
The release of the 2025 health counterfunding is expected to improve the state’s healthcare system, particularly in the areas of immunization, family planning, and nutrition. It will also support the state’s efforts to control diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS .
