Africa’s Voice on the Global Stage: Why Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Qualification Matters

Former Nigerian international Segun Odegbami believes that Nigeria’s participation in the 2026 World Cup is crucial for Africa to have a voice on the global stage. Speaking on the role of sports in global geopolitics, Odegbami emphasized that sports can be a powerful tool for Africa to earn respect and challenge the status quo.

Odegbami noted that the global sports economy is worth over $2 trillion, with African investments playing a significant role. African athletes have made a name for themselves in international competitions, and it’s time for the continent to speak with one voice to ensure equality and confront injustice in global sports.

According to Odegbami, Africa must unite to assert its presence in the global sports arena. He urged African nations to revisit the geopolitical alliance of 1976, if necessary, and make a global statement that celebrates freedom and equality for all humanity. By doing so, Africa can challenge the existing power dynamics and earn its rightful place at the table of negotiations.

The Super Eagles’ failure to secure maximum points against South Africa has left their 2026 World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. With two matches left to play, Nigeria trails behind Benin Republic and South Africa, who tops the group with 17 points after a sanction against South Africa was lifted, leaving them with 14 points, and Benin Republic with 15 points, while Nigeria has 11 points, alongside Rwanda. The Super Eagles will face Lesotho on October 10 and Benin Republic four days later.

As Odegbami aptly put it, “Africa must come as a superpower of a different kind.” By qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, Nigeria can help amplify Africa’s voice on the global stage, promoting unity, equality, and respect for the continent’s sports industry. With determination and collective effort, African nations can challenge the existing power structures and assert their presence in the world of sports .
