AFCON 2025: Nigeria’s Super Eagles Face Title Drought Despite High Expectations

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is underway in Morocco, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles among the top contenders. Despite a strong group stage performance, the team’s market value has dropped by 18% since 2023, from €349m to €286.5m. This decline is largely attributed to Victor Osimhen’s valuation decrease from €110m to €75m following his move to Galatasaray

Senegal tops the squad market value list with an estimated €449m, representing a 64% rise from their 2023 valuation. Morocco, the host nation, has also seen a significant increase in squad valuation, rising by 26.3% to €438.65m. The Atlas Lions are expected to capitalize on home advantage to secure continental success .

Despite the title drought, which has lasted 12 years, Nigeria remains a strong contender. The Super Eagles boast talented players like Ademola Lookman, valued at €40m, and Fulham duo Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi, who are expected to play key roles. Coach Eric Sekou Chelle’s side will aim to overcome the challenges and bring home the coveted title .

Other Contenders to Watch

– Cameroon: Their squad value has risen by 85% since the last tournament, driven by Bryan Mbeumo’s €75m valuation and Carlos Baleba’s €60m worth.
– South Africa: Despite being one of the lowest-valued squads, Bafana Bafana have recorded a 139.8% increase in squad value, reflecting improved exposure for domestic-based players.

As the tournament unfolds, the balance of power may shift. Will Nigeria’s Super Eagles overcome their title drought, or will another team emerge victorious?
