Cross River Governor Charges Lawyers: “Defend Democracy, Resist Unconstitutional Acts”
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has called on legal practitioners to stand firm as defenders of democracy and accountability in Nigeria. The governor made the charge during the 2026 Bar Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Calabar Branch, held in Calabar on Thursday, April 17, 2026.
Represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey, Gov. Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and respecting judicial independence. Speaking on the theme _“Rule of Law: Safeguarding Democracy, Ensuring Accountability,”_ Odey described lawyers as “custodians of civilisation” with a duty to challenge unconstitutional actions.
“Legal practitioners have critical roles in upholding justice and defending democratic values. I urge you to remain steadfast in challenging unconstitutional actions and resisting any attempts to undermine justice,” he said.
He stressed that accountability is the “oxygen” of democracy and urged the Bar to act as the conscience of the nation by speaking truth to power and maintaining high ethical standards.
NBA Calabar Branch Chairman, Enome Amatey, used his welcome address to lament the growing disobedience of court orders and threats to institutional independence in Nigeria. He charged lawyers to be courageous, vigilant, and proactive in defending justice as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

Planning Committee Chairman Paul Ebiala described Bar Week as a moment for reflection and renewed commitment to the ideals of the legal profession.
NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN), represented by Ntufam Mba Ukweni (SAN), commended the branch for choosing a timely theme. He urged lawyers to uphold constitutionalism, promote accountability, and maintain ethical standards, especially with the political season ahead.
The Cross River government reiterated that it will continue to treat the judiciary as a co-equal arm of government. “The administration of Governor Bassey Otu will continue to respect the independence of the judiciary,” Odey stated.
Chief Joe Agi (SAN), in a vote of thanks, commended the state government for its support to the Calabar Branch and praised the planning committee for a successful event.
With political activities heating up before the 2027 general elections, the role of lawyers in checking executive overreach and protecting court rulings becomes even more critical. The Bar Week message from Calabar is clear: the rule of law is non-negotiable if Nigeria’s democracy must survive.
From Cross River to the national stage, the call is for the NBA to lead from the front — challenge illegality, defend the courts, and hold power accountable.
