Nigeria’s Health Sector in Peril: The Need for Local Drug Manufacturing

Nigeria’s health sector is facing a critical juncture, with the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) warning that without funding for local drug manufacturing and specialised training, the country’s healthcare system will remain vulnerable.

PSN President, Pharmacist A

yuba Tanko Ibrahim, has urged both federal and state governments to prioritise funding for pharmaceutical education, describing it as a “critical pillar for national security and healthcare self-sufficiency.

Without a modern and well-funded pharmaceutical education system, Nigeria’s healthcare aspirations will remain elusive. The country’s reliance on imported drugs makes it vulnerable to supply chain disruptions and price fluctuations.

To address this challenge, PSN is advocating for:

Increased funding for pharmaceutical education
Support for local drug manufacturing
Strategic investment in pharmacy education

By prioritising pharmaceutical education and local drug manufacturing, Nigeria can strengthen its healthcare system and improve access to essential medicines. What role can the private sector play in supporting local drug manufacturing?
How can Nigeria balance the need for affordable medicines with the need to support local pharmaceutical companies?
