The Plight of Private School Teachers in Nigeria: A Profession in Crisis

Private school teachers in Nigeria are facing severe challenges, with many earning as low as N10,000 to N25,000 monthly, despite having qualifications such as NCE, HND, BSc, and Master’s degrees. This meager salary, often with no increments for years, has forced teachers to seek additional jobs to make ends meet, compromising the quality of education.

Teachers are overworked, handling classes from JSS1 to SS3, and are often relieved of their duties if they complain. The situation is dire, with some teachers engaging in manual labor to supplement their income. Ezekiel Atangs, a private school teacher with over 15 years of experience, shares his struggles: “I have been teaching in private schools for the past 15 years… I have been here for the past four years on a N15,000 salary. There has never been an increment”.

The poor treatment of private school teachers is contributing to the falling standard of education in Nigeria. Overworked and underpaid teachers cannot give their best, affecting the quality of education.
