Breaking News: JOHESU Suspends 84-Day Nationwide Strike

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike, which had been ongoing for 84 days. The strike was called off after a meeting between the union and the Federal Government, where a conciliation agreement was reached .

The strike, which began several weeks ago, was sparked by disagreements between JOHESU and the Federal Government over the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) ². The union had demanded that the government implement the report of the Technical Committee on the adjustment of CONHESS, which was submitted in 2021.

According to a communique issued after the meeting, JOHESU suspended the strike to allow for the implementation of the Federal Government-JOHESU Terms of Settlements. The union’s National President, Kabir Minjibir, confirmed the development in a text message, stating that “the strike has been suspended” .

The 84-day strike had paralyzed activities in government-owned hospitals across the country, leaving patients stranded and forcing many to seek essential medical services outside public health facilities. The strike had also triggered a 14-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in solidarity with the health workers .
