Former AGF Malami and Son Arraigned Over Terrorism Financing and Firearms Charges
The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz, over alleged terrorism financing, aiding and abetting terrorism, and illegal possession of firearms .
The DSS accused Malami and his son of committing several offenses, including:
– Knowingly abetting terrorism financing by refusing to prosecute terrorism financiers
– Engaging in conduct in preparation to commit an act of terrorism by possessing firearms and ammunition without a license
– Possessing firearms and ammunition without a license
Malami and his son pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution applied for the defendants to be remanded in DSS custody pending the commencement of trial. However, Malami’s counsel made an oral application for bail, which was opposed by the court .
The presiding judge, Justice Joy Abdulmalik, ruled that the court can only entertain a written application for bail. The case was adjourned till February 20 for hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial .
The case has significant implications for Malami’s reputation and the government’s efforts to combat terrorism. If convicted, Malami and his son could face severe penalties, including imprisonment .
