NAFDAC Defends Ban on Sachet Alcohol: A Protective Measure for Children

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reiterated its commitment to enforcing the ban on sachet alcohol, citing public health concerns and the protection of children as its primary motivations. According to NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency’s actions are well within its mandate to regulate and control the manufacture, importation, and sale of regulated products, including alcohol .

The policy to ban sachet alcohol has been in the works since 2018, when NAFDAC officials first brought the issue to Prof. Adeyeye’s attention. The small, colorful packets of high-alcohol-content drinks were found to be easily accessible to children and minors, leading to widespread misuse and addiction .

NAFDAC’s enforcement of the ban is aimed at safeguarding the health and future of Nigerian children and youth. The agency has emphasized that the ban is not punitive but protective, and that it is committed to ensuring that only safe and properly regulated products are available to Nigerians .

Some industry stakeholders, including the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), have expressed concerns about the ban, claiming that it would lead to job losses and economic hardship. However, NAFDAC has maintained that its actions are necessary to protect public health, particularly that of children and young adults .

The ban on sachet alcohol is a measure aimed at reducing the harm caused by alcohol abuse, particularly among minors. NAFDAC’s enforcement of the ban is a step towards creating a safer and healthier environment for Nigerians.
