Breakthrough in Cross River State: 80 Militants Surrender Arms in Amnesty Program
In a significant development, 80 militants have voluntarily surrendered their arms in a major peace milestone in Cross River State. The militants, who belonged to two different camps, surrendered to the Nigerian Army in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, marking a major breakthrough in the state’s amnesty program
The militants, led by ThankGod Ebikontei and John Isaac, presented themselves for amnesty at Atimbo Rear Area, Operation OKWOK, in the early hours of January 16, 2026. They surrendered a cache of weapons and equipment, including AK-47 rifles, pump action guns, and locally fabricated weapons .
The Commander of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General PO Alimikhena, described the surrender as “a major confidence-building milestone.” He added that the voluntary surrender and embrace of amnesty by these former militants clearly demonstrates that sustained military operations, combined with constructive engagement and strong collaboration with the Cross River State Government and other security agencies, remain effective tools for restoring peace .


The 13 Brigade has commended the Cross River State Government, led by Governor Bassey Edet Otu, for its unwavering commitment to peace, security, and stability. The army has urged the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to maintain a safe and secure Cross River State .
