Akwa Ibom Deputy Governor Denies Sponsoring Bill to Prohibit Women from Sleeping with Married Men

The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi, has denied reports claiming that she sponsored a bill currently before the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to prohibit women from sleeping with married men. In a statement issued by her Press Secretary, Omen Bassey, Eyakenyi described the report as false and misleading, adding that the claim was wrongly credited to her .

According to the report, the bill allegedly stipulates that any “young girl, lady or woman” caught sleeping with a married man would face 10 years’ imprisonment without an option of fine, while the man involved would pay a fine of N2 million. However, Eyakenyi’s office has categorically denied the claim, stating that she has not sponsored any bill in the State House of Assembly or anywhere else .

The statement emphasized that as a member of the State Executive Council, Eyakenyi does not possess the authority to sponsor bills independently. Any executive bill must first be deliberated upon and approved by the Council before being transmitted to the Legislature by the Governor or a duly authorized representative .

The Deputy Governor’s office has advised members of the public to disregard the fake news and rely solely on official, verified government channels for accurate information. The office also noted that the false report did not originate from the official communication channels of either the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly or the Akwa Ibom State Government .

This incident highlights the importance of verifying information before sharing it on social media. In today’s digital age, fake news can spread quickly, causing harm to individuals and communities. It’s essential to rely on credible sources and official channels for accurate information .
