The Absence of Leadership: Peter Obi Questions Tinubu’s Whereabouts Amidst Economic Hardship and Insecurity
The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has raised concerns about the whereabouts of President Bola Tinubu, citing the country’s worsening economic and security challenges. Obi’s inquiry comes as Nigeria grapples with widespread poverty, hunger, and insecurity, with an estimated 140 million people living in extreme poverty .
In a statement posted on his verified X account, Obi framed his question as “a critical demand for accountability in a national emergency.” He emphasized that leadership requires visibility, direct communication, and engagement with citizens, especially during periods of crisis .
Obi alleged that President Tinubu spent 196 days outside the country in 2025, exceeding the time he spent within Nigeria during the same period. He also claimed that Nigerians had not heard directly from the President since December 2025, with no New Year address or national broadcast to reassure citizens amidst growing hardship .

Obi’s concerns highlight the perceived absence of direct presidential engagement at a critical time. He stressed that leadership requires physical presence, direct engagement, and clear communication, especially during periods of national crisis .
The former governor warned that sustained silence from leadership weakens national unity and trust, and that “when leadership withdraws, unity falters, and the fabric of our society unravels.” As Nigeria navigates these challenging times, Obi’s call for accountability and visible leadership is a timely reminder of the importance of effective governance .
