JAMB Warns Universities Against Irregular Admissions: What You Need to Know
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a warning to institutions of higher learning in Nigeria against admitting lower-ranked candidates and bypassing higher-ranked ones. In a statement released on Monday, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, emphasized that such irregular admissions would not be tolerated and directed institutions to strictly adhere to the established guidelines governing the selection and admission of candidates .
JAMB operates a three-tier policy for university admissions, which includes Merit, Catchment Area, and Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS). Each tier is guided strictly by merit, with candidates with higher rankings being selected first, followed by others in descending order .
The board warned that any institution found to be violating these guidelines would face consequences. JAMB also dismissed allegations of unfair admission practices, citing a recent case where a candidate claimed to have been unfairly denied admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). An investigation revealed that the candidate had not been disadvantaged, as several higher-ranked candidates were ahead of her on the admission list .
To avoid irregularities and ensure a smooth admission process, institutions should:
– Strictly adhere to the established guidelines governing the selection and admission of candidates
– Ensure that candidates with higher rankings are selected first
– Avoid bypassing higher-ranked candidates for lower-ranked ones
– Conduct admissions in a transparent and fair manner
By following these guidelines, institutions can ensure that the admission process is fair, transparent, and merit-based .
