Super Eagles Threaten to Boycott Algeria Match Over Unpaid AFCON Bonuses
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are facing a major crisis ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal match against Algeria. The players have threatened to boycott the match unless all outstanding winning bonuses are paid by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) .
According to reports, the players are owed bonuses for four matches, including victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique. The team remains committed to the competition but has drawn a clear line over the unpaid bonuses, stating that they will not train or travel to Marrakech unless the issue is resolved .
This is not the first time the Super Eagles have protested over unpaid entitlements. In November 2025, the team threatened to boycott their World Cup qualifier against Gabon, citing unpaid entitlements from the Nigerian authorities. The issue was eventually resolved, but the current situation is yet to be addressed .

As of the time of filing this report, the NFF has not issued an official statement on the matter. Attempts by SaharaReporters to obtain a reaction from the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, proved unsuccessful .
If the Super Eagles boycott the match, it could have serious consequences for the team’s AFCON campaign. The quarterfinal match against Algeria is scheduled for Saturday, January 10, and the team’s absence could result in a default loss .
