LunagisthubNigeria’s Senate Takes Bold Step to Combat Cybercrime
The Nigerian Senate is taking proactive measures to tackle rising insecurity and technology-driven offenses across the country. Senator Shuaibu Afolabi Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, announced that the Senate is currently revising the National Cybercrime Law to address the evolving cyber threat landscape .
The existing law has been in place since 2015, and the rapid advancements in technology have created new challenges that require a more comprehensive and modern legal framework. The new law aims to repeal the existing one and promulgate a new one that takes into account the rise of Artificial Intelligence, new forms of cybercrime, and the UN Convention on Cyber Crimes .
The Senate’s efforts to combat cybercrime focus on several key areas, including:Digital Infrastructure: Ensuring that digital infrastructure reaches all parts of the country, particularly broadband technology, to govern ungoverned spaces.
Technology-Driven Crime Prevention: Deploying technology to prevent and investigate crimes, and ensuring that security agencies have the necessary tools and infrastructure to tackle cybercrime.
Collaboration with Security Agencies: Working closely with relevant security agencies to address the nation’s security challenges and share intelligence on cybercrime .
The Senate is engaging with various stakeholders, including government agencies, security experts, and civil society organizations, to ensure that the new law is effective and balanced. The goal is to create a safe and secure online environment that promotes economic growth, innovation, and social development.
