Reps Urge Govt to Reconsider Removal of Civic Education, Computer Studies from WAEC Portal
The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to rethink the removal of Civic Education, Computer Studies, and Electrical Installation from the West African Examination Council (WAEC) portal. The lawmakers argue that these subjects are vital components of modern economies and essential for national development .
The House noted that the removal of these subjects, particularly Computer Studies, is counterproductive at a time when the world is going digital. They also pointed out that Civic Education is crucial in enlightening citizens about their civic duties as good citizens of Nigeria. The lawmakers expressed worry that the removal of these subjects would limit students’ options and violate the minimum requirement for the examination, which is eight subjects .
The House is concerned that the removal of these subjects would cause distress and confusion for thousands of students across the federation preparing for the 2026 WASSCE. The lawmakers argue that it is academically impossible for students to select and adequately prepare for new, unstudied subjects to meet the required eight subjects, especially with the examination just four months away .
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministry of Education to rescind the implementation of the directive and give students a fair chance of success at the examinations. The lawmakers believe that allowing students to write the WASSCE in subjects they have been studying since SS1 would be in the best interest of their academic success.
