Nigeria’s Public Service Sector to Crack Down on Age Falsification
The Nigerian government has proposed a proclamation to instill discipline in the public service sector by verifying the ages of public servants. This move aims to curb the practice of age falsification, which can lead to stagnation of junior staff and undermine the integrity of the service
According to the proposal, certificates issued by the National Population Commission or General Hospitals will be recognized for recruitment purposes. This move is expected to ensure that public servants provide accurate information about their age
The proposal also recommends that any public servant found to have manipulated or falsified their date of birth should be dismissed and further prosecuted in a court of competent jurisdiction. This serves as a deterrent to those who might attempt to falsify their age
However, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Mr. Phillip Ebiogeh, has stated that certificates of age declaration will remain valid in the service. This is because most hospitals have not fully digitized their records, and unforeseen events such as fires or floods could destroy original documents, making age declaration certificates necessary .
The proposal highlights the need for honesty and sincerity in record keeping in the public service sector. Accurate record keeping is essential for ensuring the integrity of the service and preventing age falsification
