Nigeria’s Senate to Exempt Police Officers from Contributory Pension Scheme
The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to exempt police officers from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this declaration during a meeting with a delegation of retired police officers. Akpabio assured the retirees that the Senate would work with the House of Representatives to pass a bill exempting police officers from the CPS
Akpabio criticized the CPS, saying it was not well thought out and has caused hardship for many retirees. He noted that policymakers often copy policies without considering local realities, which has led to many problems. The Senate President emphasized that the CPS is not suitable for security personnel, who face unique challenges and risks
Akpabio questioned why police officers remained under the CPS when their counterparts in the military and other elite security agencies had already been exempted. He emphasized that police officers who fought insecurity alongside other security agencies should be treated equally. The Senate President assured the retirees that the Senate would ensure that the scheme is fair and equitable for all police officers, from the Inspector-General to the last constable
The Senate plans to pass a bill exempting police officers from the CPS next week. The bill is expected to be signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, who is known to be a listening president. The exemption is seen as a welcome development for police officers who have been serving the country with dedication and sacrifice
