This is the view of Matthew Ashimolowo, Founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre, who believes that involving NYSC members in national security initiatives can help strengthen early detection of threats at the community level
Ashimolowo suggests that training NYSC members in security awareness can increase the country’s security level. He notes that these young individuals are often the first point of contact with communities and can provide valuable insights into potential security threats. The cleric cites Israel’s mandatory service system as an example of how a country can build a strong security framework. In Israel, citizens are required to serve in the military from the age of 18 to 22, which helps to instill a sense of national pride and responsibility. Ashimolowo believes that Nigeria can learn from this model and adapt it to its unique context
However, Ashimolowo also warns against the unrestrained use of state police, pointing out that political authorities might take advantage of it. He notes that Nigeria’s history has shown that those in power can misuse their authority, and therefore, any security reform must be carefully considered to avoid abuse
Ashimolowo’s proposal highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
