Nigerian Students Abroad Face Financial Distress as Scholarship Payments Delayed

The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the alleged non-payment of scholarship stipends to Nigerian students studying abroad. The probe aims to ensure that Federal Government-funded scholarship programs are administered efficiently and transparently

The scholarships are offered under the Federal Government’s Bilateral Education Agreement to support Nigerian students studying in partner countries. Beneficiaries are entitled to monthly stipends, allowances for feeding, transport, books, and equipment, health insurance, warm clothing, take-off grants, and travel arrangements .

Parents of affected students have raised concerns over prolonged delays in stipend payments and the hardships their children face abroad. They noted that award letters issued to students guaranteed monthly supplements and allowances, but payments have been inconsistent, with outstanding arrears accumulating from 2023 and 2024

The delays have severely hindered students’ ability to cover basic living expenses, jeopardizing their health, safety, and academic performance. The parents urged the committee to investigate the cause of the delays and ensure that the students receive their stipends promptly

The House Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships, and Higher Education Financing, chaired by Ifeoluwa Ehindero, will investigate the matter and work to resolve the issue of delayed scholarship payments to Nigerian students abroad

The delayed payment of scholarships to Nigerian students abroad has caused significant financial distress for many beneficiaries. The House of Representatives’ investigation into the matter is a step towards resolving the issue and ensuring that students receive the support they need to pursue their education
