Ondo APC Urges National Assembly to Pass State Police Bill

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its weight behind the creation of state police as a means of addressing the escalating security challenges confronting Nigeria. In a statement issued on Saturday, the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Steve Otaloro, urged members of the National Assembly to set aside political and ethnic affiliations and pass the bill in the interest of national peace and tranquility

The APC expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the country, citing persistent rural banditry, violent herdsmen attacks, kidnapping, and urban criminal activities. The party noted that the Nigeria Police Force, despite its dedication and sacrifices, cannot fully secure every community across the federation without structured support from state-level policing systems

The APC recalled the efforts of the former governor of Ondo State, the late Rotimi Akeredolu, who advocated for the decentralization of policing and established the Amotekun Corps, a regional security network designed to complement federal security agencies. The party commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his involvement in strengthening and modernizing the Amotekun Corps

The APC urged the National Assembly to speed up deliberations and pass a comprehensive bill allowing states to create and manage their own police structures. The party called on lawmakers to rise above political differences, partisan calculations, and ethnic jingoism and unite behind this patriotic legislation

The creation of state police is a critical step towards addressing the security challenges confronting Nigeria. The Ondo APC’s call for the National Assembly to pass the state police bill is a timely and necessary move. We urge lawmakers to heed the call and work towards a safer and more secure Nigeria.
