Federal Government’s Ambitious Plan to Reintegrate Over One Million Out-of-School Children

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a plan to reintegrate over one million out-of-school children into the formal education system. This initiative, announced by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa at the 69th National Council on Education Summit, aims to provide quality education to children who have been left behind.

The program focuses on children between the ages of 7 and 9 who will be enrolled in low-cost private schools and training The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education, National Commission for Nomadic Education, and National Commission for Mass Literacy and Non-Formal Education.
– A task force has been set up to document the extent of the problem, and over 21,000 out-of-school children have already been identified in the Federal Capital Territory.
The ministry has established 109 functional learning centers and transit schools across the 36 states and the FCT, through which 15,224 learners have been enrolled so far.

The Minister emphasized that the program is designed to address the pressing issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria, which has been exacerbated by various factors, including poverty, cultural, and economic challenges. By providing access to quality education, the government aims to empower these children and provide them with a chance to succeed.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, commended President Bola Tinubu’s education reforms, particularly the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which has supported over 624,000 students. The governor emphasized the importance of education in promoting social mobility, national unity, and sustainable development
