Nigeria Immigration Service Introduces Single Travel Emergency Passport for Stranded Citizens Abroad

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to launch a Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP), a new biometric travel document designed to assist Nigerians abroad whose passports have expired, been lost, or stolen. This initiative aims to enable citizens to return home securely and verifiably.

The STEP document will serve as a temporary travel solution for Nigerians abroad facing passport-related issues.
It will be valid for single entry into Nigeria and can be obtained at designated Nigerian embassies and consulates abroad.
The document is designed to provide secure and verifiable identification for Nigerians returning home.

The STEP initiative is part of the NIS’s ongoing reforms to strengthen identity management and border governance frameworks in line with global best practices. The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, emphasized the service’s commitment to efficient service delivery and robust identity protection.The introduction of STEP was announced during the Joint Thematic Meeting of the Khartoum, Rabat, and Niamey Processes held in Abuja, which Nigeria co-hosted with the Government of France. The meeting brought together key stakeholders in migration management, including international organizations and representatives of African and European countries .
