Nigerian Navy Strikes Against Illegal Refining in Ondo Communities

The Nigerian Navy has dealt a significant blow to illegal refining activities in Ondo State, dismantling an illicit refinery and arresting seven suspects in the process. The operation, carried out by the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda, targeted illegal refining sites in Obe-Jedo and Obe-Adun communities in the Ilaje Local Government Area.

According to Navy Captain Aliyu Usman, the FOB Commander, the operation was intelligence-driven and aimed at curbing economic sabotage and maritime crimes. The Navy team initially faced resistance from a group of hired youths and women attempting to shield the illegal activity. However, after a tactical reassessment, the operatives returned and discovered that the stolen crude oil and refined products had been moved to nearby storage facilities.

The Navy seized approximately 3,000 litres of refined diesel stored in jerrycans, along with several cooking ovens used to process stolen crude oil. Seven suspects were arrested, although the main operators of the illegal refinery have been declared wanted.

Captain Usman condemned the confrontation as a “dangerous innovation” by criminal elements bent on frustrating legitimate security operations and sabotaging national resources. He warned that anyone obstructing the Navy’s operations against crude oil theft would be treated as an accomplice and prosecuted accordingly.

The Nigerian Navy has reiterated its commitment to curbing crude oil theft and safeguarding national assets. The service urges law-abiding residents of riverine communities in Ondo State to resist being used by oil thieves and to cooperate with security agencies in their efforts to protect the nation’s resources.
