Protecting Nigerian Children Online: A Call to Action

Protecting Nigerian Children Online: A Call to Action

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged technology companies and digital platform operators to implement stricter online safety measures to protect Nigerian children from growing threats such as cyberbullying, grooming, sextortion, and exposure to harmful content.

While the internet has created opportunities for learning, creativity, and communication, it has also exposed children to serious risks that demand urgent attention. The NHRC’s Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, emphasized the need for collective action to ensure that tech providers and digital platforms prioritize child safety.

To protect children online, the NHRC recommends:

Ensuring that online content is suitable for children’s ages and developmental stages.
Providing easy-to-use reporting tools for users to flag abusive or harmful content.
Protecting children’s personal information and online identities.

The NHRC stressed that technology companies have a moral and social responsibility to design online spaces that prioritize child safety over profit. By working together, we can create digital environments that are safe, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of young users.

The NHRC has established an automated online reporting platform and a toll-free line (6472) where cases of cyberbullying, grooming, and other forms of online exploitation can be reported anonymously. Let’s work together to protect Nigerian children online.
