Pressure Mounts on Goodluck Jonathan to Drop 2027 Presidential Bid
Former President Goodluck Jonathan is facing intense pressure from prominent figures in the Niger Delta to abandon his alleged plans to run for the presidency in 2027. Instead, they want him to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Ex-militant leader High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, led a delegation to Jonathan’s Otuoke home in Bayelsa State on October 16. The meeting, which lasted several hours, was reportedly Tompolo’s first public appearance in nearly a decade, underscoring the significance of his mission.
According to sources, Tompolo urged Jonathan to drop his alleged presidential ambition and support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. Tompolo emphasized that the Niger Delta region is largely supportive of Tinubu’s continuation in office and that Jonathan’s decision to run might not receive the expected “home support”.
Jonathan reportedly listened attentively to Tompolo’s counsel and promised to reflect on the advice before making his position public. The former president’s decision remains uncertain, but the pressure from influential figures in the Niger Delta is mounting .
The meeting between Tompolo and Jonathan highlights the complex dynamics of Nigerian politics, where influential figures often play a significant role in shaping the country’s leadership. As the 2027 presidential election approaches, it remains to be seen how Jonathan will respond to the pressure and whether he will throw his weight behind Tinubu’s re-election bid .
