Senate Urges Government to Review Military Salaries Amid Economic Hardship

The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to increase the minimum wage and salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, sponsored the motion, citing the need to adjust salaries to reflect current economic realities.

Ndume highlighted the sacrifices and risks that military personnel face daily, emphasizing that their compensation should reflect their value to the nation. He pointed out that Section 217(2) of the 1999 Constitution empowers the Armed Forces to defend Nigeria and maintain territorial integrity.

The senator revealed that junior personnel in the Armed Forces earn a minimum monthly wage of between ₦50,000 and ₦60,000, which he described as “grossly inadequate” considering the current economic conditions. This low pay affects morale, recruitment, retention, and operational effectiveness.

The Senate’s motion urges the government to review the salary structure and minimum wage for military personnel, ensuring that their compensation is commensurate with their sacrifices and the current economic realities. This move aims to boost morale, improve recruitment, and enhance operational effectiveness.

By increasing military salaries, the government can demonstrate its appreciation for the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families. This move would also be a step towards addressing the economic challenges faced by military personnel and their families.
