Millions March Across US in “No Kings” Protests Against Trump’s Policies
Millions of Americans took to the streets in all 50 US states to participate in the “No Kings” protests, venting their anger over President Donald Trump’s hardline policies. The protests, which spanned from New York to Los Angeles, saw demonstrators calling for the protection of democracy and criticizing Trump’s strong-arm tactics.
Organizers claimed that seven million people marched in the protests, with demonstrations popping up in small cities across the US heartland and even near Trump’s home in Florida. In Washington, thousands chanted “This is what democracy looks like!” near the US Capitol, where the federal government was shut down for a third week due to a legislative deadlock.
While the protests were largely peaceful, there were some incidents of unrest in downtown Los Angeles, where police fired non-lethal rounds and tear gas to disperse crowds. The protests drew support from various groups, including progressive organizations and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The “No Kings” protests aim to send a message to Trump that his policies are not going unnoticed. Demonstrators slammed Trump’s attacks on the media, political opponents, and undocumented immigrants. “I never thought I would live to see the death of my country as a democracy,” said 69-year-old retiree Colleen Hoffman, who participated in the march in New York .
The protests come amid a government shutdown and a heated debate over Trump’s policies, with Republicans ridiculing the demonstrations as “Hate America” rallies. However, protesters argue that they are exercising their constitutional right to free speech and assembly .
