Madagascar Swears in New President Amidst Uncertainty
Madagascar is set to swear in

Colonel Michael Randrianirina as its new president, following a military power grab that saw President Andry Rajoelina flee the country. The country’s highest court is expected to formalize Randrianirina’s appointment in a ceremony, despite Rajoelina’s camp condemning the move as “riddled with procedural illegalities.”

Randrianirina, a 51-year-old commander of the CAPSAT unit, has pledged to hold elections in 18 to 24 months and appoint a consensus prime minister. He has also emphasized that Madagascar has not chosen a military regime and that the government will be composed of civilians.

The international community has been closely watching the situation in Madagascar, with the United Nations and other organizations expressing concern about the potential for instability and human rights abuses. Foreign delegations, including from the United States and the European Union, are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

The road ahead for Madagascar is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the country needs stability and good governance to address its many challenges, including poverty, power cuts, and social unrest. Will Randrianirina’s leadership bring the stability and prosperity that Madagascar needs? Only time will tell.
