President Tinubu Grants Clemency to 175 Individuals, Including Posthumous Pardons for Herbert Macaulay and Ogoni 9

In a significant move, President Bola Tinubu has granted clemency to 175 individuals, including posthumous pardons to Nigerian nationalist Herbert Macaulay and the Ogoni 9. The pardons were announced after the National Council of State meeting in Abuja.

A Nigerian nationalist and co-founder of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), Macaulay was unjustly convicted by British colonialists in 1913. This posthumous pardon aims to clear his name and restore his legacy.

The group, including Ken Saro-Wiwa, was pardoned posthumously for their activism and contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.
Former House of Representatives member Farouk Lawan, Mrs. Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia, Barrister Hussaini Umar, and Ayinla Saadu Alanamu were also pardoned.

82 inmates :Granted clemency, enabling them to reintegrate into society.
65 inmates: Had their prison terms reduced.
death row inmates :Had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.

This move demonstrates President Tinubu’s commitment to justice, reconciliation, and human rights. By granting clemency to these individuals, he aims to promote healing, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society.

The Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy

The committee, chaired by Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, reviewed cases and made recommendations to the President. Their report led to the approval of these pardons and clemency grants.

This decision reflects the President’s efforts to uphold the principles of justice, mercy, and compassion.
