Nnamdi Kanu’s Hearing Brought Forward to September 26

The Federal High Court in Abuja has brought forward the hearing for Nnamdi Kanu’s application for release to September 26, 2025. Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in detention since his arrest in Kenya and repatriation to Nigeria .

Kanu’s main terrorism trial was initially scheduled to resume on October 10, 2025, with the court expected to rule on the no-case submission filed by his lawyers. However, due to the urgency of his health condition, the court has decided to hear his application for release earlier .

Kanu’s lawyers have cited his deteriorating health as the reason for the urgent application. His brother, Emmanuel Kanu, filed a 14-paragraph affidavit stating that Nnamdi Kanu suffers from a life-threatening heart condition and that the medical facilities where he is currently detained are inadequate for proper treatment .

During the hearing, Kanu’s counsel, Uchenna Njoku, informed the court that the Federal Government’s lawyers had served a 37-page counter-affidavit on the same morning, leaving him insufficient time to review it. The lead counsel for the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, agreed that the matter should be given priority, noting that his team was ready to address it at any time .

The case has been transferred to Justice James Omotosho, who is presiding over the main trial between Nnamdi Kanu and the Federal Government. The judge noted that the matter is urgent and may be scheduled for hearing before the next adjourned date of the main trial .
