Reviving Sports in Akwa Ibom: Governor Umo Eno’s Vision for a Brighter Future

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has announced plans to revive inter-school competitions across the state. This move aims to harness the talents of young athletes and promote sports development in the region. The governor made this declaration at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival, which brought together over 3,600 youths from all 31 local government areas .

The 2025 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival was a resounding success, with participants competing in 18 individual sports and five team sports. Governor Eno described sports as a multi-billion-dollar global industry and a key component of his administration’s tourism drive, as outlined in his ARISE Agenda. The festival was the first of its kind in 15 years, and the governor hopes to make it a regular event in the state’s calendar .

The governor rewarded athletes who won medals at the sports festival, with gold medalists receiving ₦500,000 each, silver medalists ₦250,000, and bronze medalists ₦150,000. Local government areas that excelled in the festival also received cash rewards, with Itu LGA emerging as the overall winner with 70 trophies and a cash prize of ₦15 million .

Governor Eno announced plans to inaugurate Arise Resorts in December, which will feature world-class amenities, including a nine-hole golf course and sporting pavilions. This development is expected to boost sports tourism in the state and provide a platform for young athletes to train and compete .

The governor’s vision for sports development in Akwa Ibom is promising, with a focus on discovering and nurturing young talents. By reviving inter-school competitions and investing in sports infrastructure, the state is poised to produce future sports stars who will make their mark on the global stage. With the governor’s commitment to sports development, Akwa Ibom is set to become a hub for sports and tourism in Nigeria .
