A Call for Patience: Nigeria’s Leaders Urge Citizens to Stay Hopeful

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, have made a heartfelt appeal to Nigerians to exercise patience with President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Despite the economic hardships caused by the government’s reforms, Akpabio and Akume believe that these changes will ultimately lead to a more prosperous Nigeria .

Since the removal of fuel subsidies on May 29, 2023, Nigeria has faced significant economic challenges, including:
Prices have more than tripled, affecting transportation and goods.
Rates have surged above 35%, impacting household budgets.
The currency has fluctuated wildly against the dollar.

Akpabio likened the process of rebuilding Nigeria to constructing a cathedral, emphasizing that it requires time, sacrifice, and resilience. He urged citizens not to despair but to look forward to a brighter future. Akume also assured Nigerians that the government is working to ease the pain caused by the fuel price hike and will unveil plans to improve the economy .

Other leaders, such as APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, have echoed similar sentiments, encouraging Nigerians to support the government’s reforms and promising a better future. Ganduje specifically mentioned that the economy is expected to stabilize and improve by 2025, bringing relief to citizens .
