Resident Doctors’ Nationwide Warning Strike Brings Healthcare to a Standstill

In a bid to press home their demands, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a five-day nationwide warning strike, effective from Friday, September 12, 2025, to Tuesday, September 16, 2025. The strike, which began at 8 am on Friday, was unanimously resolved upon during an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on September 10-11, 2025 .

NARD is demanding immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund and settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25-35% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review.
The association is also seeking payment of 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears and prompt disbursement of specialist allowances.
NARD wants the restoration of recognition of West African postgraduate membership certificates and issuance of membership certificates to deserving candidates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
The doctors are calling for the implementation of the 2024 CONMESS, resolution of outstanding welfare issues in Kaduna State, and addressing the plight of resident doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso .

The strike follows the expiration of a 24-hour ultimatum issued to the federal government after an earlier 10-day deadline lapsed on September 10 without resolution. Despite assurances from the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Isaq Salako, that ongoing negotiations could prevent the strike, NARD proceeded with the industrial action

The strike is expected to disrupt clinical services and leave patients stranded, as resident doctors play a critical role in emergency wards and public hospitals across Nigeria. The association has warned that if their grievances are not addressed, they may embark on a full-scale industrial action .
