National Grid Collapse Disrupts Power Supply Across Nigeria

A nationwide power outage hit Nigeria on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, after the national grid collapsed, causing widespread disruptions to electricity supply. The outage occurred around 11 am and 12 pm, with a significant drop in megawatts generated.

Several distribution companies, including the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), announced the disruption of power in their areas. AEDC attributed the power outage to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am, affecting electricity supply across their franchise areas. PHED stated that the development meant no supply in their four franchise states: Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

The distribution companies have appealed to customers for patience, assuring that work is ongoing to restore power once the grid is stabilized. Efforts are already underway to restore the grid.

This incident adds to the number of times the national grid has collapsed in the country. In February, some parts of Nigeria experienced power disruption following a similar collapse. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has promised to work on a buffer system to prevent power outages when the system fails, citing aging infrastructure as the cause.

The TCN’s Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, revealed that the company is working with the presidency to approve a “super grid” system. This system would allow for an alternative transmission line to be switched on in case of a fault, minimizing power outages .
