Nigeria’s Gas Production Hits 7.6 bscfd: A Milestone Achieved

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has announced that Nigeria’s gas production has reached an average of 7.59 billion standard cubic feet per day (bscfd) in July. This milestone is a testament to the country’s growing gas industry, which has sustained steady growth over the past three years.

What’s even more remarkable is that despite the increase in gas production, gas flaring has decreased to 7.16% in July 2025. This reduction is a significant step towards achieving the commission’s goal of ending routine gas flaring by 2030. The NUPRC has implemented various initiatives to reduce gas flaring, including the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme and the development of a Decarbonisation and Sustainability Blueprint.

The commission reported a Domestic Gas Delivery Obligation (DGDO) performance of 72.5% in July 2025, up from 71.8% in June. This increase indicates a steady improvement in the sector’s ability to meet domestic gas demands.

According to the NUPRC, the breakdown of gas production by contract type in July 2025 was as follows:

– Marginal Sole Risk (formerly Marginal Fields): 63%
– Production Sharing Contracts: 24%
– Joint Venture contracts: 10%
– Sole Risk operators: 3%

The NUPRC’s commitment to reducing gas flaring and promoting sustainability is evident in its initiatives. By investing in gas infrastructure and promoting carbon capture and storage, the commission aims to minimize the environmental impact of gas production while maximizing its economic benefits.

What do you think about Nigeria’s growing gas industry? Can the country sustain this growth and achieve its goal of ending routine gas flaring by 2030?
