The Burden of Passport Fees: Peter Obi Slams FG’s Latest Move

The Federal Government’s recent hike in passport fees has sparked outrage, with former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, leading the charge. Obi has criticized the government for its increasing tendency to worsen the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has increased the cost of a 32-page passport booklet to ₦100,000 and the 64-page version to ₦200,000. Obi described these new charges as “outrageous” and “disconnected from the country’s harsh economic realities.”

In a statement posted on his X page, Obi lamented that the cost of obtaining a passport now exceeds workers’ wages, further worsening hardship for Nigerians. He noted that the government’s obsession with putting a burden on the populace is “becoming legendary” and reveals its apparent disconnect with the people and their suffering.

Obi’s criticism serves as a reminder that the government must consider the impact of its policies on ordinary Nigerians. As the country navigates its economic challenges, it’s essential that the government prioritizes the welfare of its citizens and works to alleviate their suffering.

What do you think about the recent hike in passport fees? Do you agree with Peter Obi’s criticism of the government’s move?
