In a heartwarming display of compassion and commitment to the welfare of ordinary citizens, the First Lady of Cross River State, Eyoanwan Otu, has cleared 11 months of unpaid stipends owed to 1,234 female street sweepers across the Central and Northern Senatorial Districts. This initiative not only demonstrates the government’s appreciation for the dedication and hard work of these women but also empowers them to continue their vital role in keeping the state’s streets clean and green.

 

The first lady’s gesture was celebrated in separate events held in Ugep, Ikom, Ogoja, and Obudu, where she emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating that it’s not just about payment, but about justice and dignity. She highlighted the ‘People First’ mantra of her husband, Governor Bassey Edet Otu, which prioritizes the needs of ordinary citizens and acknowledges the invaluable contributions of women like these street sweepers.

In addition to clearing the salary arrears, the first lady also distributed 170 Point of Sale Machines to the women, further empowering them in their livelihoods. This gesture will enable them to manage their finances more effectively and improve their economic well-being.

The local government chairmen and other dignitaries present at the events praised the first lady’s commitment to the welfare of women, describing her actions as “a beacon of hope and humanity.” They expressed gratitude for her efforts in restoring dignity to these women and instilling a sense of belonging among them.
