ASUU Threatens Strike Over Withheld Salaries and Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on a strike if their demands are not met. The union is calling for the unconditional release of three-and-a-half months’ withheld salaries, payment of promotion arrears, and implementation of the 2009 agreement.

ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Al-Amin Abdullahi, emphasized that the crisis affecting universities in Nigeria is not just a problem for the union, but for the entire country. He stressed that the neglect of education is endangering the future of generations yet to be born.

– Unconditional release of withheld salaries
– Payment of promotion arrears
– Implementation of the 2009 agreement
– Release of third-party deductions to the union and cooperatives
– Payment of one year’s arrears of 25/35% salary award
– Implementation of new conditions of service
– Adoption of UTAS as a payment system for universities

If the Federal Government fails to meet ASUU’s demands, the union is prepared to take drastic action, including a nationwide strike. This would further disrupt the already struggling university system, with far-reaching consequences for students, staff, and the nation as a whole.

The ball is now in the Federal Government’s court. Will they heed ASUU’s demands and work towards resolving the crisis in Nigeria’s university system? Only time will tell.
