Imo State Government Introduces Sweeping Education Reforms

The Imo State Government has announced significant reforms in the state’s education sector, aimed at reducing unnecessary financial burdens on parents and improving the quality of education. According to a memo signed by Commissioner for Education, Professor Bernard Ikegwuoha, the reforms include abolishing graduation ceremonies for kindergarten, nursery, and Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) students .

Only permitted for pupils completing Primary 6 and students completing Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3), aligning with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system.
Textbooks will now have a four-year lifespan, allowing siblings to reuse them and reducing the financial burden on parents.
Schools are required to adhere to the approved list of textbooks, ensuring stability and consistency in curriculum materials and enhancing learning outcomes.

The Commissioner emphasized that the policy aims to ensure students, parents, guardians, and schools focus on academic achievements at the end of primary and secondary education cycles. By adopting approved textbooks for a stipulated period, schools can promote cost-effectiveness for families and uniformity in teaching and learning across the state .

These reforms are expected to promote a more efficient and effective learning environment, while also reducing the financial burden on parents.
