EFCC Recovers Billions in Refinery Maintenance Fraud, Ex-NNPCL Officials to Face Prosecution

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made significant recoveries in a massive fraud case involving the turnaround maintenance of Nigeria’s refineries. The anti-graft agency has recovered over N5 billion and $10 million from contractors and government officials indicted in the scandal .

N5 billion and $10 million recovered so far, with additional N10 billion and $13 million targeted for recovery.
Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri refineries, which have received substantial funding for rehabilitation but remain non-functional.
Over-invoicing, contract inflation, and questionable payments uncovered as primary causes of refinery malfunction .

The EFCC, led by Chairman Ola Olukoyede, has taken personal charge of the investigation. Former management teams of the refineries have been interrogated, and some officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) may face prosecution soon .

The outcome of this case will have significant implications for Nigeria’s energy sector and efforts to combat corruption. The EFCC’s actions demonstrate its commitment to holding accountable those responsible for mismanaging public funds .

The EFCC is investigating the following amounts allocated to the refineries .
Port Harcourt Refinery: $1.559 billion
Kaduna Refinery: $740.6 million
Warri Refinery: $656.9 million

The investigation aims to uncover the extent of fraudulent activities and bring perpetrators to justice. With billions of naira and dollars at stake, this case is a major test of Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts .
