ASUU Warns of Looming Crisis in Nigeria’s Public Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stark warning to the Federal and State Governments, urging them to address long-standing issues to prevent an impending industrial crisis in Nigeria’s public universities. ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, expressed growing frustration among lecturers, citing poor welfare, inadequate funding, and the government’s failure to honor signed agreements .

Lecturers teach “on empty stomachs” and conduct research without essential resources like electronic journals, books, and chemicals.
Universities lack sufficient funding, leading to unpaid utility bills, inadequate transportation, and unmet financial responsibilities.
The government has not implemented the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, despite ongoing negotiations since . The ASUU warning comes in response to Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa’s statement that there won’t be another strike. However, ASUU insists that action must follow words, and the government needs to address outstanding issues to prevent a looming crisis .
